The Real Last Word on Sarah Palin

It’s time to stop talking about Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin may not share beliefs with much of the country, and that’s just fine.  She has her hands full with a special needs child, a pregnant teen, and an investigation into her conduct, all of which she’s certain to survive.  It’s okay, because at 44 – by political standards – she’s just a kid.  Her day will come.  Just not this year.

Governor Palin is formidable: a smart, congenial, accomplished woman, passionate about her country.  Continue reading ‘The Real Last Word on Sarah Palin’

Barack Obama Has Already Won

Even if the US ventures back into the Twilight Zone and elects McCain/McMILF this November, Barack Obama has already won, and made history.  The comparisons to the Kennedys and to MLK are of course, obvious, but they go beyond Barack’s youth, charisma, and oratory, and Michelle’s Jackie O-esque confidence and style.  The striking similarity, not only in carriage, but even in her coif is unmistakable.  This is the election of which JFK dreamed, and for which he died: one where the field is racially leveled, and – imagine – the biggest stink made is whether or not there is a woman on the ticket. Barack Obama, as You Have Never Seen Him

Sam and I set out last night for one our favorite Mexican restaurants: the newly refurbished El Chavo in Los Feliz. We headed west, by way of Silver Lake when on Sunset Blvd., just before Dodger Stadium, we encountered a wall of rainbow-colored portraits of Abraham Lincoln that looked oddly, and simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar. Election 2008: The Pots Calling the Kettle ‘Uppity’

Sam and I were listening to NPR this weekend when we heard a woman say, “I am sick and tired that every black man with an education is called ‘uppity,'” or something pretty close to that.

We guffawed in total agreement. Show me a white Ivy Leaguer who has been labeled as such. It may be my upbringing in the south, but uppity has always been understood as a code word; always the adjective that precedes a very specific epithet. If I know this, then you know the McCain camp does.

Online Etymology Dictionary:

uppity
1880, from up; originally used by blacks of other blacks felt to be too self-assertive (first recorded use is in “Uncle Remus”). The parallel British variant uppish (1678) originally meant “lavish;” the sense of “conceited, arrogant” being first recorded 1734. Obama/Clinton 2008: You Complete Me

He takes one state, she takes the next. He reaches the younger voter. She reaches the older voter, and especially women. Exit polls show that many Dems like them both equally, but had to choose someone, so they voted for one or the other. Well, soon they won’t have to choose. While it won’t be as tear-stained and ushy-gushy as Jerry Maguire, you can still imagine it: “We live in a cynical world, a cynical world, and we work in a business of tough competitors…” Continue reading ‘Obama/Clinton 2008: You Complete Me’

I love you, Hillary. I’m just not *IN* love with you.

I love Hillary Clinton. I love Bill Clinton. Chelsea should have done something really conspicuously fabulous by now, like making a guest appearance on Nip/Tuck or joining Brangelina in New Orleans, but I digress.

Hillary is a brilliant woman, a political machine – formidable. She hits every talking point like an Olympic archer and her knowledge is encyclopedic but she couldn’t motivate me to wait in a two-hour line to see her, much less write a check or volunteer. (Say nothing of the fact that she’s a scorpio, and in my experience they can be a little, um, less than transparent. [sorry, Nick])

Hillary Clinton is to Heath Ledger as Bill Clinton is to Ennis Del Mar

hillarypainting.jpgHillary Clinton is to Heath Ledger as Bill Clinton is to Ennis Del Mar.

We were sad about the loss of Heath Ledger. We were really mourning the loss of Ennis.

I’m not so much about Hillary, as much as I am about the return to a Clinton White House. Like many, I’m down with any “Billness” that we can bring back to this country – blow jobs and all. Life was good then.
