6 Reasons You Should Get Into the Gay Rodeo

We’re home from the rodeo, and I’m proud to say we’ve returned having won rodeo experience, new friends, a belt buckle for chute dogging, and a pulled abdominal muscle.  I don’t know what was best about the weekend: the competition itself, hearing the announcer wish Sam happy birthday both days, or hearing him say “the Page boys are married… the family that rodeos together stays together.”

Lots of photos on Sam’s site.

Every time Sam and I go to the rodeo, on the way home, I have the same thought: there’s no good reason that more gay Angelenos aren’t getting involved in the gay rodeo:

  1. Hot cowboys and cowgirls from all over, (who have the resources and sticktuitiveness to commit to a sport, travel for it, and keep livestock). Continue reading ‘6 Reasons You Should Get Into the Gay Rodeo’

Get Dirty: The 2008 L.A. Rodeo

Hey y’all.  We’re rodeo-bound this weekend, and I’m most excited about the fact that Sam and I are competing as a team for the first time.  We’re going to be posting pics and stories from the road, so stay tuned.  If you want to come out and see it all live, it’s a blast, and worth the drive.  Here are the whens, wheres, and hows.  See y’all there.

Best Pride Ever

I’ve never liked Pride, and I thought I’d rather have a thumb in my eye than march in a parade. Who knew I’d have as much fun as I did this past weekend, marching in the Pride parade with the GSGRA. Sam, Sonny, and I carried state flags and represented the rodeo.

Funny thing being in a parade. The presumption is that there’s a reason why you’re in it, and why people would care. So the spectators give you this once-over, just to make sure that you’re somebody to them, and then the onus is on you to be somebody, with a smile or a wink, or a holler, so that’s exactly what we did.

We finished up the parade route early, rolled and tubed the flags, headed for The Abbey and tipped a few in honor of pride, our right to marry, our friendship with Sonny, and the rodeo. Sam was right. It’s more fun being in the parade than watching it, but then, I guess that’s no surprise. Kinda like life.

Here are some snaps from the weekend. Continue reading ‘Best Pride Ever’

Palm Springs Rodeo: Chute Doggin’, Second Go

The ice on my ankle for a few hours sure did make the difference the next morning, when we cowboyed up and headed back out to Banning for the second day of events. Driving in the car, I started to feel all of the little muscles here and there that were sore, and I got a real appreciation for the athleticism of rodeo, after all it is a sport, no matter how well-dressed. I made mental notes about how I might train in the coming weeks for the rodeo in L.A. Continue reading ‘Palm Springs Rodeo: Chute Doggin’, Second Go’

Palm Springs Bud Light Hot Rodeo 2008

Sam and I joined the Golden State Gay Rodeo Association (GSGRA), so that I can compete in Chute Dogging at the Palm Springs Rodeo.

If you’re considering attending this rodeo, to dog a steer yourself, or to cheer me on, it’s May 2nd through 4th, and the host hotel is the Palm Court Inn. There are only 24 rooms (of 100) still available. The hotel will continue to honor the $89 room rate if you ask for the RODEO rate when you make your reservation (800) 667-7918. Ask for Susan.
