Lily Allen, Our Hero(ine)

Lily Allen is brilliant and political, with the freshly-leaked GWB (Guess Who Batman) a.k.a. Fuck You Very Much, a plinky Carpenter-esque mashup with a message to the hateful and narrow-minded BNP – a British far-right, gay-hating, white supremacist political party. I didn’t need any more reasons to love this girl, after what I’ve heard of her, but I may as well add two more. She’s got more balls than a snooker table and her heart in the right place. If she’s not at the top of the list for every major metropolitan Pride, then some queens are not paying attention. Check her out.

Sam Sparro is More Fun than Rufus, and Free on iTunes

I’m reposting this May 7th post, because this track, Black and Gold, is now available for free on iTunes. You heard about it here first, so now go get it before it’s gone. Continue reading ‘Sam Sparro is More Fun than Rufus, and Free on iTunes’

The Long Blondes at the Troubadour

Lisa hooked up the VIP seating, and Sam sacrificed a few hours of sleep on a weeknight for us to go see The Long Blondes‘ last U.S. show at the legendary Troubadour last night. There was nothing for me to do but be grateful, and I am.

The Long Blondes are a 5-piece English indie rock band from Sheffield. I fell in love with them after seeing them “put on the dog” in the video for Guilt, a song about an infidelity, and the singer’s unambiguous choice – “and guilt has nothing, nothing to do with it.”

WTF: Rock-afire Animatronic Puppets Sing Britney

Take a normal, 32-year old guy named Chris Thrash, living in Alabama, listening only to 80’s, rock, and rap (and clearly some Britney), and only reading the Bible, and give him a Rock-afire. Hundreds of programming hours later, the result is somewhere between Chuck E. Cheese and the first time I tripped on LSD, back in college. Seriously, you have to see this to believe it. But is it art? Continue reading ‘WTF: Rock-afire Animatronic Puppets Sing Britney’

On Youtube: Conny Van Dyke :)

Talent never goes out of style, it just goes into and out of retirement. Conny Van Dyke is no exception. An entertainer since 15, the woman is unstoppable. An actress, singer, and voice-over talent, she has re-emerged from retirement from show biz and is represented by Todd Justice at Venture IAB. Yes, of course, she’s also my Mom, but rather than selling you on her personally, I’ll let her talent do its own talking. Ladies and gentlemen, the fabulous Conny Van Dyke.

“He’s My Lover” from the film Framed, in which she starred with Joe Don Baker

A second video after the jump.

Vampire Weekend: Fresh, Hot, Preppy Punks

“They’re very Royal Tenenbaums,” I said to K-Dub when she recommended this band, “in that punky, educated, hot geek kind of way,” and I stand by it. I’d add “early Police” too, and after hearing a few of the tracks, I’d tack on “gonna be gigantic, if nowhere else than in the Page household.” Plus, they’re just cute as hell.

Any band of twenty-somethings that describes its genre of music as “Upper West Side Soweto” and references Congolese soukous music is all right by me. Check out the rest of their Wiki entry for more… and enjoy.
