Sam and Bronson by Tom Bianchi

In late March, Sam and I were invited to Tom Bianchi‘s home in Palm Springs to be photographed for one of his upcoming Bianchi Men collections. It was an honor and a privilege, and a learning experience that transcended the photography itself. Tom shared with us the philosophy behind his art.

It’s always fun to be shot with Sam, and I was thrilled that Tom was recording the last fleeting days of my thirties. This was the week before my 40th birthday.

The photos have arrived, and Sam and I are really pleased. I think they really capture the excitement of the day, and the intimacy Sam and I share. I love the ones with Sam reading Tom’s copy of Where the Wild Things Are, dedicated to him by his friend, Maurice Sendak. Tom said he’d send one to Maurice, and Sam was thrilled. So here are the shots I can share with you. Warning: if you click here, you will see our butts. Continue reading ‘Sam and Bronson by Tom Bianchi’

Sam and I wasted no time getting legally married.  We were in line, in the sun on 6/17, doing our best to ignore the handful of shouting haters in attendance and making friends in line.  The haters left after just a couple of hours.  Perfect.

Universal Truths I Learned from Weeding the Garden

By L.A. standards, we have a lot of land: just over 1/4 of an acre. Anywhere else, it’s a postage stamp.

Last winter, we didn’t get as much rain as we did this year, and so this year’s weed growth is unprecedented. I knew it wouldn’t be a small task, so admittedly I’ve been putting it off, and while I was out there pulling, I learned a few universal truths (yet again). Continue reading ‘Universal Truths I Learned from Weeding the Garden’

He’s Just Not That Into You

We have a friend who has been in a relationship with a woman for a significant number of years. We’ll call them Antony and Cleopatra.  She is madly and unabashedly in love with him, but he refuses to commit to marriage.

Recently, Cleopatra has been writing to me, asking us to urge the guy to pop the question. Beyond the casual and jocular “Hey, Antony, when are you going to make an honest woman of Cleopatra,” we’re just not going to do it, and anything more than that is intrusion. But, since she enlisted my opinion and advice, Continue reading ‘He’s Just Not That Into You’
