Cheeky News Recap 8/21/08

British Olympian Craig Pickering (clearly a big boy) laments that he ‘let the country down’ with a bad run at the games 1 while a Florida community let down an adorable lesbian high school student by standing behind the fundamentalist principal who shamed her, told her to stay away from children, and outed her to her family. 2

The king, and absolute monarch, of Swaziland, one of the world’s poorest countries where 40% of the population is HIV+ and can’t afford treatment or even food, sent 9 of his 13 wives (check this out) on a shopping spree across Europe and the Middle East. Nice. 3

Native Americans accepted gay marriage 4, while the Knights of Columbus, upped the ante to revoke our right. 5 Why don’t they just hand out smallpox blankets?

You have to hand it to the John McCain campaign for one thing and one thing alone: knowing and playing to their audience. The aspiring Mr & Mrs. President duly excised themselves from the “country club set” with an appearance at Sturgis where he read the words “Kid Rock” from crib notes and encouraged the would-be First Lady to enter their Miss Buffalo Chip Pageant 6 to rouse the crowd. What’s worse? She went along with it.

Item#2… I don’t think older people in this country realize just how much is going to change when they die… there is a whole generation that has absolutely no problem at all with gay people or gay marriage. What ever laws they pass in the next 5-10 years against gays have a very good chance of being repealed 5 or 10 years later when they are all dead. The generation gap between those who are retired and those who are in school now is probably the biggest gap in the history of the United States.
