Barack Obama, as You Have Never Seen Him

Sam and I set out last night for one our favorite Mexican restaurants: the newly refurbished El Chavo in Los Feliz. We headed west, by way of Silver Lake when on Sunset Blvd., just before Dodger Stadium, we encountered a wall of rainbow-colored portraits of Abraham Lincoln that looked oddly, and simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar.

“Pull over,” Sam blurted, taking the camera from the glove box.

It was an art exhibit marked by vibrant, mural-sized copies of “Abraham Obama” by pop artist/provocateur Ron English, covering the outside of the gallery and making it look like an anachronistic campaign headquarters. BTW, this is the gallery that had been circulating the now ubiquitous Obama HOPE posters, for free, for weeks, before they caught on like wildfire. We tiptoed past a gallery owner’s nightmare: a man in a blue striped shirt (see first photo) on a bench in front of the gallery who had just upchucked what even the dullest senses could discern as chicken, carrots, and a bottle of Cuervo. Ah, Silver Lake.

Inside, throngs of people lined up to meet the artist and get their books and other objet signed, and to buy the two featured posters: Camo Kid and Abe Obama, signed. $20 for the pair was a steal, and an amazing piece of propaganda to cherish for years beyond Obama’s two forthcoming terms.

We didn’t talk to Ron, as he had his hands full with real fans who, unlike us, actually knew who he was before they’d entered. He seemed amazed at the hubbub he’d caused.

It’s an exciting time, right now; exciting and frustrating. Like the future First Lady Obama, I am becoming proud of my country again for the first time in years. Yes we can.
