L.A. Rodeo Roundup 1: Not Beginner’s Luck

It was just after I dogged my first-go steer this weekend that I realized another reason I love rodeo: it’s an exercise in being present. In fact, it’s a marathon of being present, and I only participated in three events: goat dressing, chute dogging, and steer deco. I can’t imagine how it must be for Wade Earp, who competes in almost all, if not all, of the events. Sam pointed it out. We weren’t thinking about anything else, all day. Who knew we had to compete in rough stock events to feel like we’d really been on vacation?

I dogged my steers, but the highlight this weekend, by far, was Saturday, watching Sam get in the chute for the very first time, and dog his steer. I was almost as excited and proud as he was. We went one right after the other, both days. Sonny looked after me and Sam got coaching from Sam (Van Helden), both really talented cowboys. We’re grateful to have had them on our chutes.

Jonathan, Joe, and Gregory all came out to watch us play. It was a long haul, but we hope it was worth it. It sure was great to see friendly faces smiling back on us while we were getting ready. It meant so much. Thanks guys.

This weekend something else happened that hadn’t quite happened during the last rodeo in Palm Springs: we became part of a community. We’ve seen a lot of these people a few times now. They know we’re hooked, and we know twenty or so of them by name. They’ve met my Mom, and she’s great at making everyone feel like family.

Sam spied the Las Vegas Rodeo posters, noticing that the event falls on his 34th birthday, so we’ll be in the chutes that weekend. I love it

Yes, there are more pictures, including some of the action. They’ll follow today. Oh, and check out the article in the Ventura County Star.

XO, Billy

Yeee-HAW! Congratulations, both of you. You know what else is a marathon of being present? Yep. Parenthood.

Leave it to Sam to be wearing what appears to be the most stylish shirt of anyone. Not only ‘present,’ but ‘fashionably present.’ (which beats being ‘fashionably late’ by a long shot!)
