The Penis Does Not Lie. The Vagina is Ambivalent.

pinocchio.gifSam and I have always paid good attention to our fantasy life, fostering its growth and making a safe place for its expression, within the bounds of our marriage. After all, if we aren’t safe in disclosing our darkest fantasies to each other, we are doomed to repressing them. In my experience repression leads to all sorts of ills that are difficult to sort out the longer they are allowed to incubate.

One thing we’ve discovered, that I can now say is verified by science, is that the cock does not lie. No matter how forbidden the subject matter, a man comes equipped with a surefire indicator of his interest, and it’s his dick. Johnson’s response also corresponds closely with the man’s orientation. Girls, well, they like to keep their options open.

“The Northwestern researchers measured the psychological and physiological sexual arousal in homosexual and heterosexual men and women as they watched erotic films. There were three types of erotic films: those featuring only men, those featuring only women and those featuring male and female couples. As with previous research, the researchers found that men responded consistent with their sexual orientations. In contrast, both homosexual and heterosexual women showed a bisexual pattern of psychological as well as genital arousal. That is, heterosexual women were just as sexually aroused by watching female stimuli as by watching male stimuli, even though they prefer having sex with men rather than women.”

So the vagina is a natural, open-minded party girl, in some ways, while guys are a little more single-threaded.

“Typically, men experience genital arousal and psychological sexual arousal when they watch films depicting their preferred sex, but not when they watch films depicting the other sex. Men’s specific pattern of sexual arousal is such a reliable fact that genital arousal can be used to assess men’s sexual preferences.”

Add to this the fact that we have a few friends whose orientation is a bit dubious, and you can see why I dredged this study up from a 2003 archive to bring it to you now. While I’ve always believed that the cock tells no tales, I have wondered about men who aren’t being honest with themselves about their orientation, and then I read:

“Even gay men who deny their own homosexuality will become more sexually aroused by male sexual stimuli than by female stimuli.”

The plot thickens. Now if only those of us who are questioning would show themselves some love and spend some quality time with some porn, it might put an end to unhappy repression. It might also become rigidly obvious to the neocon set that once and for effing all, it isn’t a choice, and the hating can stop at any time.

Just days before we were married, Sam and I met Sidney Poitier and Dirk Dehner (Tom of Finland’s widower). Sidney wished us “100 years of Happiness”. Dirk urged us: “Love him for all that he is.” I’d like to think we’re making good on both wishes. And that’s my wish for you this holiday season: “Love each other, for all that you are.”
